What is Terralene®?

Terralene® is part of a group of polyethylene (PE) and is available in different compounds, each with varying proportions of renewable raw materials. With a number of different compounds available, it's an ideal material that can be used by injection moulders.

Polyethylene – Polyethylene is a widely used thermoplastic polymer that belongs to the family of polyolefins. It is composed of repeating ethylene monomer units and has the chemical formula (C₂H₄)n, where "n" represents the number of monomer units, giving it a high molecular weight.

Terralene® is a range of specialised compounds derived from bio-based polyethylene (bio-PE) that promotes a more sustainable and circular economy. These compounds are designed to be recyclable and offer numerous environmental benefits.

Utilising renewable resources like sugar cane, all Terralene® grades contribute to the conservation of fossil fuels. The cultivation of sugar cane absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, effectively reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions. When the plant is used to create plastics, the CO2 remains bound within the plastic throughout its entire lifecycle, further mitigating its impact on the environment.

It's important to note that while Terralene® granules are bio-based, they are not biodegradable. This durability allows for the creation of products with extended lifespans. However, at the end of their useful life, products made from Terralene® can be seamlessly integrated into existing polyethylene material streams for recycling. This ensures a closed-loop system, as Terralene® products are 100% recyclable, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.

APPLICATION

Terralene® can almost directly replace traditional PP in the production of items such as eco-friendly drink stirrers, coasters, cookie cutters or any other product that requires a PP-like feel. Below are some product ideas that could be injection moulded in Terralene® to create a sustainable plastic moulded product.
